Residents of Encinitas may have notice the bright orange “Yes on Measure F” yard signs that have appeared in the yards of their friends and neighbors around the city. In the past two weeks, local volunteers have walked neighborhoods in Encinitas, Cardiff and Leucadia, distributing yard signs to their neighbors.
Measure F, if passed, would allow for regulated access to medical marijuana in Encinitas, with city and law enforcement oversight. Currently, Encinitas has no local laws governing medical marijuana access, and patients are forced to seek out cannabis medicine on the black market, out of sight from city and county officials.
James Schmachtenberger, local proponent and Encinitas Resident, has led this effort, from his front porch in coastal Encinitas. “We think that it is very important to show voters that they are not alone in their support of Measure F, that this is something that their friends and neighbors are also supporting, because Measure F is a citizens initiative, placed on the ballot by the community and for the community.”
Phonebanking efforts are also underway, to reach out to likely voters to inform about them about Measure F, and to convince them to vote in November.
“Our biggest opponent is apathy,” James stated, “The vast majority of Encinitas residents believe in patient access, and support local regulations and oversight for the well being of the patients and the greater community. But if residents don’t vote, measures they support won’t pass.”
Other outreach efforts are planned in the coming weeks, including an aggressive get out the vote campaign targeting supporters.
