The Encinitas Campaign to allow regulate medical marijuana has received the endorsement of the Chicano Democratic Association, the largest and oldest association of Latino Democrats in San Diego County.
The CDA recognizes that Latino’s have been disproportionately targeted for marijuana prosecution. In California, Latino’s are 3 times more likely to be arrested for marijuana offenses than whites. In San Diego City, Latinos are at 1.2 time s the rate of whites, despite having a lower usage rate.
Moreover, the CDA recognizes that by forcing patients to turn to the black market it is the Mexican Cartels that have profited. The cartelsmake approx. 20 Billion Dollars from drug trade. An estimated 15% – 60% of that profit is from marijuana (60% is the official US government estimate). This money is used to buy approx. 2,000 guns per day from the US, pay drug runners, assassins, kidnappers, and cartel foot soldiers
In 2008, during the Iraq war, more people were murdered in Tijuana than in the same period in Baghdad (which, aside from the obvious factor of war, is also four times the size of Tijuana), and
35,000-40,000 have died since the launch of Mexico’s War on Drugs.
In light of these facts, the Chicano Democratic Association has said “no” to the black market and “yes” to regulated patient access, by endorsing our ballot proposition.
We thank them for their support, and we look forward to working with them on this very important campaign!
